Today we talked about how Socrates hates Maryland crabs and soft crabs which literally just blew my mind, but I guess I get it if you don't grow up on the Easter shore. Then my fellow classmates introduced their shadows and we moved on. We talked a little bit about site and location, but for the most part we talked about crabs and how weird Socrates is, just kidding Bob. Alright, so before class this exchange student named Jason amazed everyone. At lunch, we all and when I mean we all, I mean fifteen to twenty of us turned around and caught Jason and videotaped him. It wasn't bad or anything, he just did something that was pretty dang cool. You know how you can spin basketballs on your finger, well he was doing that but with his Mac. Yes, he was spinning his mac laptop on his finger and I have it on videotape too if you want to see it. Your choice, its pretty incredible though. Back to class, after our whole crab spiel we talked about how if we went to Chicago we wouldn't e
Site and Situation Site Geographers can describe the location of a place by using the word site. Site is the physical character of a place or location. Some important site characteristics include the following: climate, water, soil, topography, soil, latitude, vegetation, and even elevation. Some sites are chosen for their distinct resource supply. Sites on hilltops may be chosen because they have an advantage if they are attacked. Others may set up camp by a river or stream for trading and communication purposes. The southern half of New York City's Manhattan is twice the size that it originally was in 1626. It original cost was $23.75 in Dutch gold and silver coins. In the eighteenth century, people started to create landfills by sinking old ships and dumping trash and refuse on top of them. the site of New York city has grown and developed greatly since 1626 due to all of the changes made by people.  Situation The location of a place relative to other places is called si
Blogging Errors Today Mr. Schick showed us what was both right and wrong with our blogs. He told us to come up to his desk one by one to see what he likes and dislikes. I'm next to be called up, oh gosh! Yes I am currently writing this in class in case you haven't realized yet. I was just told that all I need to add is a title to my blogs so it is easier to see what the blog is about without having to read into it. As you can see, there is a title at the top, woohoo! There is nothing more to write so I am just going to watch people get teased by Socrates because of their weird, but wrong blogs. NOOOO!!! Sorry, just realized I have Spanish next and died a little inside. I was just informed that Socrates will not be here tomorrow... Boohoo!! Besides that, I have nothing more to say so.. The End
Today in Mr. Schick's class we got our tests back, and if you got a 100% you rang the bell twice. If you got an A, you rang it once, and if you didn't get an A, you didn't get to ring it. I didn't get to ring it this time because I didn't get an A. I got an 86. Socrates also checked our world maps and routes to school assignments. Then we took some notes off of the front board and discussed why every point on Earth is unique. We talked about place and region and discussed the difference. We then discussed why Socrates and his wife moved to the countryside and where he used to live. Socrates and his wife used to live near the festival and then they moved because his wife wanted to have horses. They bought a horse and had it live at a friend's, but then later decided that they wanted to own a place where the horse could live. So Socrates and his wife moved so they could own a horse. Mr. Schick wasn't too happy about moving but he says that he enjoys having a p
Today Socrates had us draw a mental map of the world and of a route from our house to John Carroll. I couldn't get past Thomas Run Rd. On many hand maps, Darlington doesn't even show up and on typing documents it always says Darlington is spelled wrong because nobody knows what it is. HOLY SHITAKI MUSHROOMS!!!! I almost forgot the newest addition to our class; "Faith". I almost forgot that our class complained so much that we finally got a new AC unit. I think that most of us thought of the whole AC thing as more of a joke but today we were surprised by a new Faith. It was really odd though because when I walked in it was cold. It was weird and unsettling until Socrates showed us that we actually got a new one. Now we don't have to walk into a steamy room and walk out sweating. I think Socrates was glad too, not only because the new AC unit has a touch screen type remote, but also because he used to sweat like a frozen water bottle on a hot summer day. Your welcom
Today was a very fun class because I got to finish my homework while Socrates graded his last few tests. Basically we all did our homework while he finished reading and correcting test essays. The only bad part was that I had a splitting headache and I felt nauseous for the whole class. I did not go up to the nurse however because I thought I could bear the pain. Then my side started to hurt and I was tempted to ask to go to the nurse. You know that feeling when you get lightheaded and your heart speeds up and you feel kind of sweaty. Well that's it! Except the room was already hot and we weren't really working so I pushed through it. It stinks though because I have Spanish next and my side pain is growing worse by the minute. I don't know if I feel bad because I'm sick or because of my side. Ten minutes left in class, should I ask, I don't know. It hurts when I walk so I'll just wait it out. I'll go to the nurse when I pass out on the floor. Which by my gue
It appears that I have forgotten to write my blog Friday or Saturday. Now I have no excuse and Socrates is probably shocked. Friday we talked about two maps and how they were different and which one was correct and which was incorrect. Then we watched a little film where people were trying to sell maps to people in the White House. It was all fake of course, then we continued to talk about the two maps. Class was mainly about the maps, except for the part in which the girls complained that it was too hot. The Bel Air versus John Carroll game was really fun too. The only thing was I didn't know if I wanted to be at the top of the bleachers or the bottom. If you look at it, if you sit at the top and the structure collapses you have the longest drop. But if you are at the bottom and somebody falls it is human dominoes and you get squished into a pancake. I decided to stand somewhere in the middle and I told my friends if this goes down like dominoes then jump and we will see what happ
Today is Mr. Socrates' class we were told that the class was going to get more difficult as the year continues. We discussed maps and how we are going to work on them now that the whole Socrates thing is over. After talking about the next section we were given a packet to work on. I was a little nervous about doing the packet at first though because I am awful at mapping. I finished after a little bit which is surprising because I am really bad at geography. Maps are definitely not my strong suit. We were told not to turn it in but to instead keep it, now I'm probably going to lose it. As I am writing this Socrates is still talking about how Mexico and Hawaii can grow coffee and we can't. He is also talking about how when you travel to Canada you don't need a passport. I have visited Canada before to see Niagara falls and it was really pretty. I took the boat that actually goes under it and you can get soaked. Canada is in fact very peaceful but I like the US better. Th
Today in class I did not know all of the answers to the test in fact I thought that one question was kind of hard so I thought about it for a while. I was almost 100% sure that it started with a P like pictographer but nope! It in fact starts with an S. Turns out that pictographer isn't even a word. It is actually a stenographer. A stenographer writes in shorthand often for a judge so that he can write whatever the people say in court. That way the judge can simply say, "what did the prosecutor say two minutes ago and the stenographer can go and look it up." I was so convinced that it was a pictographer but that isn't even in the dictionary. So I basically made up a word for the answer. I also didn't know what the extra credit was, I thought it was Big Mountain because it was donated back to the Indians and they named it that. It was either that or Big Hill. I think I at least got that one right and I would have gotten it right if you said like who was the preside
Today we talked about the planes hitting the towers and what went down. Mr. Schick told us where he was and how he found out about it. Then we reviewed for the test that's tomorrow. The odd thing is that 9/11 is both a happy and sad day for my family. Today is my mom and dad's anniversary but also the anniversary of 9/11. My parent's 26th anniversary is a happy thing but my dad is not always happy. See, my dad's company got a huge contract in 2000, and the contract would have sent my dad up to be promoted and sent to the World Trade Center. My dad politely declined and gave it to his friend because my dad couldn't leave where we live. He has lived here his whole life. Well, Salisbury but anyway, my dad's friend was going to work in the building with several others from my dad's field. I think God stepped in here sand saved all of these men from my dad's company though because about six weeks later his company lost the contract and all of the promotions w
Mr. Schick or Mr. Socrates himself, taught us more about Socrates today. He showed us how and why Socrates died on the EXCELLENCE PowerPoint. Mr. Schick explained to us that Socrates could have saved himself twice but he decided not to. The first opportunity appeared when he was tried in front of 500 people. He could have simply said that he would stop and that he was sorry or he could have defended himself. He decided to do neither, instead he simply admitted that he didn't recognize the gods that the state did. He was proud that he didn't believe in those gods. The other opportunity occurred when he was in jail. The guards let him out because they didn't want him to die. they liked him so they tried to set him free and let him run. Socrates refused and instead stayed until it was time to be poisoned. He took the cup, gave a final speech, shook his fist, and drank. The worst part was drinking the poison because it not only killed you, but it tortured you first. It wasn'
Today in Mr. Schick's class we continued the presentation and took some more notes on the vocabulary he gave us. I was just informed that I had a doctor's appointment at 2:00 in the class before. I was a little nervous and I didn't know if I could just walk up to the office at the end of class or if I needed to tell Mrs. A (my next teacher). Mr. Schick knelt beside my desk and asked me if I knew that I was leaving early. I told him I was and he told me I could leave class early if I needed to. He was really nice about it and I thanked him for the offer. Then we watched a video of his dog jumping because he was so happy to see him. We didn't get to finish up the vocabulary but I have a feeling that he is going to touch up on it again tomorrow. At the end of class Mr. Schick told me I could just go to my locker and then head up to the office and I didn't need to give anyone my slip.  Also, my doctor's appointment didn't go so well.
Today in class we talked more about A Message To Garcia and how you should just do your job when asked. We also looked at a PowerPoint on Excellence and why it is important. Mr. Schick showed us both new and old vocabulary and their definitions so we could copy them down. Then he told us about moral virtues and how when he was in Boston he found a woman's wallet and brought it up to the front counter so she could pick it up. He told us that he didn't have to do that and that he could have just taken the money and her ID and everything but that isn't the right thing to do. He then told us about a little diner he went to and how his daughter gave a man a cup of hot chocolate because he was standing in the rain playing with his daughter. Mr. Schick told us that his daughter didn't have to give him the hot chocolate but she did because it was a nice thing to do. Life is really about the little things and if the little things can make satisfy you than you are truly happy. I
